SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT IN ADRIATIC COASTAL AREAS AND HINTERLAND
Despite recent efforts, the Programme Area still needs exploit the full potential of innovative transport services and multimodal links. Both in Italy and Croatia road transport dominates all others, which, paired with steadily increasing traffic, causes big congestion and pollution problems, especially in summer months. These problems are particularly felt in areas with consistent tourist flows, therefore SUTRA involves primarily tourism-oriented areas. While the technology to implement less impacting means of transport exist, the pace of its implementation needs to be accelerated in order to meet present and future needs. The overall objective of SUTRA is to promote sustainable mobility on the Adriatic coast and its hinterland. By mainstreaming innovative mobility concepts for passenger transport, urban centres in the Programme area will be able to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality (in line with the recommendations of Directive 2008/50/EC) and reduce CO2 emissions.
