The cohesion policies relating to the 2014-2020 programming period are financed both by national and by European funds, to which the national co-financing is associated. The main source of fundings is represented by the Italian National Cohesion and Development Fund (FSC), followed by the European Structural Funds (European Fund for Regional Development - ERDF and European Social Fund - ESF) which require the national co-financing quote. According to the nature of cohesion policies the allocated resources amount to a total of 139.328,9 million of euro for the seven-year period (updated at 30 june 2023), while 103.307,0 million of euros are allocated to the Southern Regions.
The monitoring within the National Monitoring System of cohesion policies is mandatory of all the funds. The data of the operation financed are then dynamically displayed and published in open data on the OpenCoesione portal that enables to explore the main dimensions related to the Programmes and projects, national and European funds and territorial context. The exceptions are Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived - FEAD and some allocations of the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC).
Compared to the 2007-2013 and 2021-2027 programming periods, at European level in the 2014-2020 programming period have been assimilate to the objectives of the cohesion policy also the resources allocated for rural development (EAFRD) and for maritime and fisheries policy (EMFF): however, these are not displayed in this infographic and the projects that refer to the two funds are not directly navigable on the OpenCoesione portal despite being available in the open data section. When the ERDF and the ESF are considered jointly with the EAFRD and the EMFF they are called European Structural and Investment Funds (ESI Funds).
